Learn more about air quality in Northern California
A SPARE THE AIR day is issued for the Sacramento region when the Air Quality Index (AQI) is forecast to reach 127 or higher. Because the Sacramento Valley is shaped like a bowl, ozone pollution can present a serious problem in the summer.
In the San Joaquin Valley, Spare the Air days are no longer declared for areas such as Stockton and Modesto (San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties) but "Air Alerts" are issued when the air quality is expected to be especially poor.
