Sacramento County sheriff's deputies are searching for a man who shot and killed an O'Reilly Auto Parts employee Thursday night.

The armed robbery suspect entered the store on 4423 Elkhorn Blvd. around 7:15 p.m. and ordered the three employees onto the ground.

Sgt. Chris Berg said one of the employees did not comply; he instead grabbed a knife from behind the counter and stabbed the suspect. The suspect then shot the employee in the upper torso and ran from the store, Berg said.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was in critical condition when he was taken to the hospital. He was later pronounced dead. No other information about the victim was released.

Deputies set up an 8- to 9-block perimeter to search for the gunman, but took it down just before 9 p.m. A helicopter was circling the area and announcing the shooter's description. He is described as a black man, 18 to 25 years old, 5'6" to 5'8" tall with a skinny build. He was last seen wearing a black baseball cap and hoodie with something covering his face.

Berg said the suspect was wounded and left a trail of blood from the scene. K9 officers were used to help track the suspect.

The two other employees were not injured during the robbery.
