Konami's Cox talks Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, next-gen possibilities

After a recent behind-closed-doors hands on session with the upcoming action game Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 from Konami, Lead Game Producer Dave Cox took some time out of his busy schedule to chat about the game with News10's Game Guy Barry White.

The game, which is a continuation from 2010's Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, picks up where the previous title left off and has players once again controlling Gabriel Belmont.  This time, however, Belmont, is not the whip-wielding vampire hunter he was in the original.  Staying true to the evens of the original game in the story arc, he is now Dracula himself.  Furthermore, not only has the protagonist gone through a sea change, but the game's setting has as well as Lords of Shadow 2 takes place in a fictional contemporary Transylvania rather than the traditional medieval setting typically found in a Castlevania title.

"What we've tried to do is develop a world that feels real," explained Cox.  "At the same time, it's based on more, like, modern European cities where you you have castles, you have kind-of old cobblestone streets, gargoyles, that kind of stuff next to modern buildings and modern skyscrapers."

Cox believes that this old world/new world combined setting will allow players a greater sense of exploration and give them more gameplay options than was found in the original Lords of Shadow game.

"It's a much more kind of open experience," he commented.  "It gives players a lot of freedom to explore than we had in the previous game."

Gameplay expansion is not limited to the setting and open worldness of the upcoming title.  As Dracula, the player also has new weapons at their disposal.  Not only does the game's protagonist have abilities one would expect as a vampire, such as his bite, but there are also new primary weapons that players can switch between, including a life-stealing sword, a powerful set of flaming fists, and a variation upon Belmont's iconic whip.

Those looking forward to enjoying all 20-plus hours of this action/adventure title will have to do so on the previous generation of video game consoles or PC.  According to Cox, the development team has no plans to release Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 on either Playstation 4 or Xbox One.  The main reason for this, he said, was because the game was already fairly far into development when they received the specifications and tools necessary for creating game software for the platforms.  Of course that's not to say that Cox's team doesn't have things planned for them, though what he and his team are thinking of doesn't look to have anything to do with the Castlevania franchise itself.

"We're not going to revisit Castlevania," Cox stated.  "I mean, for us this is the end of the story - the end of the line."

He continued:  "This is the big conclusion for Lords of Shadow 2.  I think fans will be satisfied with the ending; I think it's a fantastic ending and we're going to move on to new things for the new generation so it's a clean break for us more than anything."

Set to release February 27 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is rated "M for Mature" by the ESRB.
