WINTERS - More than three weeks after a deadly shooting in broad daylight, Winters police say they have their man.
William Carl Gardner III was arrested in Las Vegas early Tuesday morning. Police say he was on the run since killing Leslie Pinkston.
Gardner was found more than 500 miles from where the shooting took place. Monday night, Last Vegas Metropolitan Police surrounded an apartment after receiving word that Gardner was on the run in Sin City.
"Since the murder, law enforcement teams have significantly focused on apprehending Gardner," said Winters Police Chief Sergio Gutierrez.
The Winters Police Department says they got a tip about Gardner's whereabouts and immediately notified the U.S. Marshals Service.
"We received information he was in a particular general area. We were able to locate him after a few hours of surveillance," said Albert Najera with the U.S. Marshals.
Gardner was taken into custody following a hostage standoff involving a friend and a small child. They were not injured.
Authorities say Gardner shot and killed Pinkston on Nov. 18 in downtown Winters in broad daylight. Pinkston had a restraining order against the suspect.
The victim's family could not be reached at their house but were informed of the arrest.
"I personally notified the victim's mother, Leslie's mother last night after we had the news of the capture to inform her that he was in custody and she stated to me she was able to sleep now being at ease," said Gutierrez.
Neighbors also said they were relieved the suspected killer has been caught.
Officials say Gardner is now in the process of being extradited to Yolo County to face murder charges.
