SACRAMENTO - A man accused of shooting and killing a Sacramento County animal control officer in November appeared in a Sacramento Superior Courtroom Friday morning.

Joseph Corey, 65, plead not guilty to fatally shooting 45-year-old Roy Marcum of Elk Grove in Galt on November 29.

Marcum was dispatched to Corey's home on 1st St. to retrieve pets believed to have been left behind when Corey was served an eviction notice.

According to authorities, Corey shot Marcum when he and a Citibank employee knocked on the door. Corey then barricaded himself inside the home and a 17-hour standoff ensued before officers managed to catch and detain him.
