Police standoff on Evona Court in Modesto.
MODESTO, CA - A Modesto police standoff that began Wednesday evening, came to a dramatic conclusion around 5:35 a.m. on Thursday.
Modesto police responded to the 1600 block of Evona Court around 6 p.m. after getting a domestic violence call between a man and woman in their 80s.
While en route to the scene, officers received information that the man had physically assaulted the woman, said Lt. Rick Armendariz of the Modesto Police Dept.
According to Armendariz, police arrived at the scene and attempted to make contact with the man who then threatened them with a handgun.
Police set up a perimeter around the home and called SWAT and hostage negotiators to the scene.
Armendariz said negotiators tried to reason with the man, but he refused to surrender. He was seen by officers on several occasions walking around in the home with his handgun, growing more erratic and increasingly hostile towards officers as the situation progressed.
Concerned for the woman's safety, SWAT officers were sent into the home to rescue the hostage. At some point while removing the woman from the home, the man threatened the SWAT members with his gun and was fatally shot, said Armendariz.
The woman held hostage was taken to the hospital in an undisclosed condition.
