Retailers are giving last-minute shoppers plenty of time to catch up.

Toys R Us and Macy's both plan to stay open around the clock in the days leading up to Christmas. Others, including many Nordstrom and Target stores, are open later but not all night. Most Walmart stores are already open 24/7.

For the third year in a row, Toys R Us stores will remain open from 6 a.m. Dec. 21 through 10 p.m. Christmas Eve, the retailer announced late Wednesday. The retailer's Times Square store in New York City has already started a marathon of holiday store hours, remaining open 24/7 since Dec. 2.

It's all part of offering customers convenience to shop whenever they want, said Troy Rice, Toys R Us executive vice president of stores and services, in a statement.

Macy's will stay open from 7 a.m. Dec. 21 through midnight Dec. 23; some stores will stay open until 2 a.m. Christmas Eve while others will be open through 6 p.m. Most stores not open all night will reopen at 7 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.

Since Black Friday, most Target stores are open until 11 p.m. or midnight Monday through Saturday and until 10 p.m. on Sundays. Stores generally close at 10 p.m. outside of the holiday season.

The Toys R Us Times Square store was open for about half the number of consecutive hours last December, and saw the most traffic in the days leading up to Christmas, spokeswoman Jennifer Albano says. But the overnight hours still attracted customers shopping in the weeks before Christmas too, she says.

"We have seen that these extended hours appeal to those who might work non-traditional hours or moms who want to sneak out to finish their shopping while dad stays home with the sleeping kids, or vice versa," Albano says.

Both Macy's and Toys R Us have all-night sales to go along with their extended store hours the weekend before Christmas.
