Salt Fire near Somerset in El Dorado County, Oct. 2, 2012

EL DORADO COUNTY, CA - Authorities have reopened Mt. Aukum Road southeast of Placerville and lifted voluntary evacuations as they gain the upperhand on a wildfire.

Cal Fire spokeswoman Teri Mizuhara said the fire began on Sandridge Road near Bucks Bar Road at 11:35 Tuesday morning. About two dozen residences were threatened and there were voluntary evacuations for those who lived on Moody and Myers roads.

As of about 1:45 p.m., Cal Fire said flames had burned 35 acres but firefighters had stopped them from spreading forward. Later reports had the Sand Fire revised downward to 15 acres with 50 percent containment.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
