OAKLAND, CA (AP) - Police are investigating the shooting of an 11-year-old boy while he was sleeping in his home in East Oakland.
Family members say Luis Dueñas Hernandez was sleeping on the lower mattress of a bunk bed in a rear bedroom when someone fired more than a dozen shots inside the home shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday.
The sixth-grader was one of eight people in the house at the time of the shooting. No one was else was injured.
The boy was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland, where he is listed in stable condition. His family says the boy has a bullet in his liver and that doctors fear removing it.
Police do not yet have a motive for the shooting. No arrests have been made.
