SACRAMENTO- According to data received from a public records request by the Sacramento Bee, city worker credit card use for travel-related purchases this year is at its highest level since 2008.
Meanwhile, credit card charges by Sacramento city employees in 2012 is nearly $1.5 million, the highest its been since 2009. That raises a lot of eyebrows considering the recently completed audit of city-issued credit cards.
Those numbers seem alarming, but Sacramento's Police Chief says a recent review shows no criminal wrongdoing.
Of the more than 200 city-issued credit cards reviewed, police found no criminal conduct by city employees.
The review included nearly 48 thousand purchases from all the different departments including Parks and Recreation, Department of Transportation, and Utilities.
"Anyone who had a credit card over the past 5 years, their credit card purchases were examined," said Chief Braziel. "We went back and did a thorough scrubbing of credit card use."
While the audit of city employees is finished, the criminal probe continues into questionable credit card spending by former mayor's aid Lisa Serna-Mayorga. She allegedly charged $9 thousand of personal expenses on her city credit card.
An outside auditor is also looking into credit card use by the Mayor and City Council Offices.
Chief Braziel says none of that information is being released right now.
While the recent audit of 200 city worker credit cards shows no criminal conduct, the City Manager wants to cut back on credit card use.
