NEVADA CITY, CA - Vicki Albright had a great time on her vacation to Italy last month, but she has no idea how she got there.

"No one caught it, my passport had expired a long time ago," traveler Vicki Albright said.

Albright traveled from San Francisco International last month.  She said a United Airlines ticket agent, even several TSA screeners at SFO's security checkpoint didn't red flag her.

Her passport had clearly expired in August 2011. But a customs agent in Frankfurt, Germany stamped her passport when she arrived the next day, no questions asked.

When Albright arrived in Italy, she realized her mistake.

"I quickly went to the US consulate where officials were clearly stunned I had gotten so far on an expired travel document, I said 'it's a mystery to me too,'" Albright said.

The Department of Homeland Security is looking into the passport mishap, but a spokesperson could provide no further information as of Wednesday night.

Albright was issued a new passport by officials in Italy.

"It was troubling, I'm just one traveler but you have to wonder who else is getting through?" Albright said. "Clearly, something isn't working."
