'Sing' for the Nintendo Wii U.

The first eight words of Louis Prima's 1936 swing hit are "Sing, sing, sing, sing everybody start to sing" and, if Nintendo of America CEO Reggie Fils-Aime has anything to say on the topic, that's exactly what Wii U owners will do once the system is available later this year through its newly-revealed musical performance title Sing.

As Fils-Aime put it during Nintendo's 2012 E3 press briefing, Sing is a karaoke/dancing hybrid game "where everybody plays".

Unlike titles like Ubisoft's Just Dance or Microsoft's Lips, both of which require all players to keep their eyes on the screen to play, Sing is designed to have players enjoying entertaining one another.

The way the game looks to be set up, one person takes lead vocals and sings karaoke-style with words that come up on the Wii U's tablet controller.  Having the lyrics on the Wii U tablet means that the singer can be facing his/her audience while he/she performs rather than looking and singing at the television screen.  Similarly, monkey-see-monkey-do dance moves show up on the TV so anybody who isn't singing can dance along in a somewhat choreographed manner.

While this seems like it would work fairly well on paper, there is a question as to how well this will actually work in practice.  It's honestly hard to see many groups playing this game with the same gusto demonstrated in the promotional video shown during the press briefing.  Then again, with enough homemade appletinis, and any reservations to sing and group-dance to Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" will likely melt away.

Sing is currently a working title for this Wii U game and it may change by the time it launches.
