UC Davis Women's basketball team waits to hear who they will face in 1st Round of the NCAA Tournament.
DAVIS, CA - The UC Davis Aggies women's basketball team hit the practice floor Tuesday afternoon to prepare for its first game ever in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament, against the second- ranked Stanford Cardinal.
The 16th seeded Aggies will enter the first round of the tournament on Saturday as the heavy underdogs to the number one seeded Stanford, but UC Davis is looking to put a fight.
"We are not surrendering at all, we are going to do our best," said Big West Tournament MVP Paige Mintun.
"We won't back down," added the Aggies junior. "We are prepared to step on the floor and play our hardest."
And while the odds of an upset are unlikely, the chance does exist. In 2005, UC Davis began a string upsets over Stanford when the Aggies football team defeated the Cardinal 20-17, three months later the Aggies men's basketball team upset Stanford followed by the soccer and baseball teams.
"I'm not sure those Stanford teams were ranked number two in the nation," said Aggies Head Coach Sandy Simpson.
Simpson, who will retire at the end of the year, says his team will not concede anything to the Cardinals, but regardless of the outcome the game will be the pinnacle of his 14-year career.
"Maybe I don't do everything right, but my timing is pretty good on this one," said Simpson. "It is a great gift the kids have given me."
UC Davis will play Stanford at Maples Pavilion on ESPN or ESPN2. Tip off is at 3:30 p.m.
