SACRAMENTO, CA - Prices for popular brand name prescription drugs differ from pharmacy to pharmacy at 10 Sacramento area stores.

However, a price comparison for out-of-pocket costs for Advair, Viagra, Lipitor, Nexium and Plavix, per tablet or package, could save you money.

Advair, an asthma medication, had the biggest price shock, prices were more than $50 apart. Prices for Viagra were $15 apart. SEE GRAPH BELOW FOR PRICE RANGES

Experts said, very often big box stores like Wal-Mart and Target can offer lower prices because they buy in bulk.

"Group-buying can bring down the price because you're buying in greater quantities," University of Pacific Pharmacy professor Joseph Woelfel said.

Independent pharmacies said they may charge more for brand name drugs then the bigger guys, but remind customers they won't be undersold.

"When someone comes in saying I can get it cheaper down the road, I will match the price," Professional Village Pharmacy owner John Richards said.

Many pharmacists argue most people don't pay out of pocket and don't buy just one pill. Insurance co-pays will likely be the same no matter where you go.
