SACRAMENTO, CA - You can love them or hate them, but you can't get away from hashtags on Twitter.
Now, there's a group of volunteers in Sacramento hoping to use them for good by connecting people to their neighborhoods.
"This region is really changing and developing and we're at an inflection point," Sacramento Hashtag Project leader MaryJayne Zemer said. "It would be really great to see people get involved in the future of not just the region, but their little place within it."
Zemer is spearheading the Sacramento Hashtag Project, an online interactive map which is designed to help people connect with the neighborhoods where they live, work and play.
"What's cool about that it will help you find people and places you maybe didn't know were right around the corner," Zemer explained.
You go online, type in your address and it highlights your neighborhood. It will also show all the tweets connected to that neighborhood.
"Let's say there is a lost dog. Using that neighborhood hashtag, it helps you know about an issue you might not have known about," Zemer explained.
Small businesses were first to jump on board, like Amanda Lawrence of Shine Café located in Sacramento's Mansion Flats neighborhood.
"I see so much culture flourishing," Lawrence said. "And thought it seemed like a great way to pull neighborhoods together."
Right now, the map features four Sacramento neighborhoods - Downtown Sacramento, Midtown Sacramento, East Sac and West Sacramento.
The project is working to launch more soon, but all that web hosting isn't cheap.
So far, Zemer has footed the bill on her own, but she's launched a Kickstarter campaign to get some help.

"This project doesn't work for anyone unless we reach a tipping point where there are enough people using hashtags worth paying attention to," Zemer added.
