SLIDESHOW: Boycott recall rally in Sacramento
SACRAMENTO, CA - A group opposed to Sacramento's boycott of Arizona over that state's controversial immigration law rallied in front of City Hall Thursday.
Demonstrators called for a recall of Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson the city council. The city council voted 6-1 for the boycott which calls for limiting city employee travel to Arizona and bans future city contracts with the state.
"The city of Sacramento is a local city council and they should worry about local issues, not some state that they have no business being in," said rally organizer Paul Smith and 5th Congressional District candidate.
After first being denied a permit, Smith sought an emergency injunction and was allowed to proceed. Police stood by, but the protest remained peaceful.
Through the website Recallsacramento.com launched by 1380 KTKZ conservative radio talk show host Eric Hogue, boycott opponents are working to build a base for the recall. Smith is confident they can get they can get the signatures needed to force a recall election.
"We will get the right amount of names in a short amount of time," Smith said.
