Mark Cavendish wins Stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California
SACRAMENTO, CA - Avoiding the last minute spills made by other cyclists near the State Capitol, Mark Cavendish of Great Britain won Stage 1 of the Tour of California Sunday afternoon.

Cavendish, who was riding with HTC-Columbia, finished Stage 1 with a winning time of 4 hours, 4 minutes and 45 seconds. According to Cavendish, he leads a busy lifestyle and he's focusing on the next stage of the race.
"We drive to the hotel, get a massage and then we get dinner," Cavendish said. "We're pretty tired from the day's work, so we go straight to bed. It's a pretty sad life. but it makes it worthwhile when we win."
Before the end of the race, cyclist Andrew Pinfold of Canada fell down on his way to the finish line at the State Capitol.
The competitors started Stage 1 in Nevada City at 11:45 a.m. Sunday and they covered 104.3 miles.
According to Bob Burns with the Sacramento Sports Commission, about 100,000 people watched Cavendish and the other cyclists finish Stage 1 in Sacramento.
Cyclists will kick off Stage 2 in Davis at 11:00 a.m. Monday.
