SACRAMENTO, CA - Sue Dickman said it is hard for small business owners these days, especially when you own a tanning salon.
"It's going to hurt us, for sure. We're trying to make a living," said Dickman, owner of Planet Beach in East Sacramento.
Dickman isn't pleased about a new 10 percent tax on tanning, imposed by the federal government to help pay for the new health care overhaul.
Dickman said ultraviolet tanning beds can be safe when used responsibly but many doctors disagree.
"A tax is good. It's like a cigarette tax, a down payment on your future health,"said Sacramento dermatologist Emil Taghetti.
Taghetti said longterm exposure to UVA rays can be hazardous to your skin and your eyes.
The tanning tax takes effect in July 2010. Many longtime tanners say it won't keep them away.
I"ve been tanning for 11 years and I love the way it makes me feel," said Alexandra Cojacaru of Sacramento.
