VACAVILLE - Firefighters say a 3-alarm structure fire Wednesday morning damaged 16 apartment units and caused $200,000 in damages.

Vacaville Fire Battalion Chief John Jansen said the cause of the fire at the Grandview Court Apartments on the 500 block of Grandview Court is under investigation.

Firefighters and Pacific Gas and Electric crews declared 16 apartment units uninhabitable because of damage to electrical panels, says Jansen in a news release.

The fire caused about $50,000 in damage to the apartments' contents and another $150,000 in structural damage.

Firefighters say they found two apartments burning when they arrived on scene around 1:30 a.m.

"The fire moved quickly and at this time of night, it could go undetected for a long period of time." Jansen said. "Until the glass broke and the family knew what was going on."

According to Jansen, the family thought somebody was trying to break into their home when they heard the shattered glass. That's when the husband, wife and two children discovered the fire and got out of the apartment.

"They notified their neighbors to get everybody out," Jansen said.

Red Cross workers were on scene to help residents find a place to stay.
