SACRAMENTO, CA (AP) - Opponents of Gov. Jerry Brown's November tax initiative are making their case with a new television commercial hammering the governor's claim that the billions of dollars it would raise will go directly to schools.
The commercials started airing Thursday, a day after Brown's Proposition 30 campaign began releasing its own TV ads. The No on Proposition 30 campaign calls the initiative "all smoke and mirrors."
It says "we will never know where the money really goes" if voters approve the quarter-cent increase in the statewide sales tax and higher income taxes for the wealthy.
Some of the Proposition 30 TV ads say "Sacramento politicians" won't be able to touch the $6 billion a year the initiative would raise, a claim that runs counter to a nonpartisan analysis.
