LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A former San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer has testified that he mistakenly pulled out his handgun instead of a stun gun when he shot and killed an unarmed black man on an Oakland train platform last year.
Johannes Mehserle broke down in tears Friday as he told jurors in his murder trial that he heard a pop that didn't sound like a gunshot.
Mehserle says he thought the Taser had malfunctioned.
Mehserle is accused of murdering 22-year-old Oscar Grant on New Year's Day 2009. He resigned from the transit police force shortly afterward.
His trial was moved from Alameda County to Los Angeles because of intense media coverage and racial tensions.
