WASHINGTON (AP) - More than 700 people have been killed working on projects to rebuild Iraq following the U.S. invasion in 2003. And a federal investigative agency says nearly half of those killed were Americans.

The 719 deaths represent a tragic component of the Iraq war that rarely has been brought to public attention, largely obscured by the much higher number of men and women killed in combat.

Navy Cmdr. Duane Wolfe was among the 719 lawyers, engineers, contractors and others who paid a heavy price trying to put a broken Iraq and its shattered economy back together.

Their deaths initially had been included among the war's combat fatalities.
