SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - A former policeman in the U.S. island of Puerto Rico has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for providing security for drug dealers.

The U.S. Department of Justice says Javier A. Diaz Castro was sentenced Thursday in the Caribbean territory's capital of San Juan.

He was charged in a 2010 indictment along with 88 other law enforcers in Puerto Rico as part of an extensive FBI undercover operation. Diaz provided security for what he thought were illegal drug deals but were actually part of the FBI sting.

He was a 10-year veteran of the police department and was assigned to the frauds unit at the time of his arrest.

Diaz received cash payments of $2,000 per drug deal. He was convicted last year.
