STOCKTON, CA - The California Highway Patrol and Stockton police are investigating a fatal accident that involved an SUV, which was implicated in an earlier hit and run.
The crash on the Fremont Street offramp of northbound Highway 99 happened as the alleged hit and run vehicle was getting away from the scene Wednesday morning.
The driver lost control while taking the offramp and crashed, CHP Sgt. Bill Languemi said. One passenger was killed, while another was captured while trying to leave. The driver who crashed got away.
The CHP said alcohol played a role in the accident. "It looks like drinking was involved. The driver and the passenger had both been drinking, Languemi said.
The victim of the hit and run actually called police and followed the SUV that later crashed.
The victim of the hit and run was not injured in the collision that started the chain of events, Languemi said.
