SACRAMENTO, CA - Investigators were working to determine why a 26-year-old woman was shot to death in a car early Saturday morning, according to police.

The shooting happened around 2:26 a.m. Saturday near Power Inn and Florin Roads, said Sacramento County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran.

Deputies responded to the corner of Palmer House and Blackhawk Drives to find two 26-year-old women in a gold sedan, Curran said. The driver had been shot in the upper body and continued to drive to the corner where she was pronounced dead by paramedics, according to Curran. The passenger was not injured, he said.

Investigators learned the passenger and victim had been at the Fastrip gas station at the corner of Florin and Power Inn Roads together with a crowd of 50-70 people, said Curran.

The two women were sitting in their car, which had been parked on Florin Road, when three to seven gunshots were fired by someone in the crowd, Curran said.

The large crowd had dispersed from the gas station when deputies arrived, however, five people were detained for questioning, Curran said. He said none of those 5 people were expected to be the shooter.

Investigators are working to determine a motive for the murder and have yet to confirm if the victim was the intended target.
