MERCED, CA (AP) -- A Central Valley mother and her son have pleaded not guilty to charges that they killed her husband to collect life insurance benefits.
Laura Hernandez and Erick Hernandez Camarillo face charges of murder and insurance fraud stemming from the fatal shooting of 39-year-old Alberto Rodriguez Macias near Dos Palos in March.
The two appeared in Merced County Superior Court on Tuesday.
Authorities say the 37-year-old Hernandez and 20-year-old Camarillo, a former UC Merced student, were in financial distress and hoped to redeem $1 million in life insurance policies.
Macias was Hernandez's husband and Camarillo's stepfather.
