OLIVEHURST, CA - Reportedly upset because a grocery item left on top of her car spilled, an Olivehurst woman now faces felony assault with a deadly weapon and felony child endangerment for allegedly trying to run down her daughter and boyfriend.
Melanie Oakes, spokeswoman for the Yuba County Sheriff's Department, said Karen Michelle Hicks, 29, was arrested Sunday afternoon. Hicks, boyfriend Gregory Kilgo, 32, and their 4-year-old daughter had gone to the market and returned to the Olivehurst Apartments on Chestnut Street. Hicks parked the car and with the ignition still on, Kilgo and the child got out of the car. At that point, Oakes said witnesses and Kilgo said Hicks backed-up the car at a high rate of speed, put it in drive and aimed toward Kilgo and child. The car hit the curb, missing the child and Kilgo by a few feet, witnesses said.
Again, Hicks backed up, put it in drive and headed toward the boyfriend and girl, Oakes said. The second time Hicks went up the handicapped parking ramp, missing her daughter by about three feet and Kilgo by a foot, said witnesses.
Hicks stopped when Kilgo threw a bottle of soda at the car window in an attempt to break it and grab the ignition keys, according to the police report.
The child and Kilgo were not hurt.
Oakes said Hicks first admitted to responding deputies she had tried to run over Kilgo but later denied it. Deputies noted Hicks appeared to be under the influence of a substance and a blood sample was taken form her.
Hicks was booked into Yuba County Jail and awaits formal charges.
