6.0 earthquake off North Coast, 2/4/10, Map from USGS
EUREKA, CA - The U.S. Geological Survey has slightly downgraded a noontime magnitude 6.0 earthquake off the North California coast to 5.9.
The quake was recorded at 12:20 p.m. Pacific time, 47 miles west, southwest of Eureka.
The USGS Web site said the shaking was felt within a 150-mile radius, as far north as southern Oregon and as far south as Sonoma County. Local officials and residents reported feeling a rolling sensation that caused items to fall from walls and shelves.
Many said Thursday's event didn't feel nearly as severe as the magnitude-6.5 quake that struck the same region Jan. 9. That quake, centered 25 miles in the Pacific from Eureka, caused an estimated $21.8 million in damage, according to officials..
