Tylar Witt, Steven Colver
PLACERVILLE, CA - Tylar Witt, the lovestruck teen charged with murdering her mother because she disapproved of the girl's relationship with her boyfriend, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity Monday.
Witt, 15, is accused of drugging her mother last June so that boyfriend Steven Colver, 20, could slash her to death while she slept. Colver entered a plea of not guilty during the same court hearing in Placerville.
The El Dorado County District Attorney's office last week announced it would not seek the death penalty against Colver. Witt is ineligible for the death penalty because of her age, but she will be tried as an adult.
Joanne Witt, 47, was murdered after reporting the relationship between her daughter and Colver to the authorities. Tylar was 14 at the time and Colver was a guest in the Witt home.
Following the killing, the teens fled to the Bay Area where they were arrested hiding behind a San Bruno restaurant.
Colver's attorney was asked how Witt's insanity plea might affect his handling of the case against his client. Dain Weiner said he wasn't sure.
"Don't know yet," said Dain Weiner. "We'll have to be playing it as it goes. Don't know yet how that will mesh with our defense. Just have to wait and see."
Motions in the case will be heard March 26, including arguments over whether the two suspects should be tried together or separately.
