SACRAMENTO, CA - It isn't too often a car break-in is caught on tape. But that's what happened Monday morning in Sacramento and now police hope someone will recognize the person responsible.

The victim's car was broken into at 8:30 a.m. in a parking lot on the 5600 block of H Street, said Officer Konrad von Schoech of the Sacramento Police Department. The thief took a briefcase and other personal items, von Schoech said.

When officers investigated, they learned a security camera captured video of the suspected thief in a small pickup truck already parked in the lot. Von Schoesh said the man was then seen driving next to the target car when the victim left, breaking a window and taking a canvas briefcase before driving off.

The man was black, 24-30 years old, approximately 5 feet 8 tall, and 165 pounds. He was wearing a white t-shirt, white and orange checkered baggy shirt, blue jeans, and white tennis shoes. He was driving a 1998 dark gray Ford Ranger pickup.

Anyone who recognizes the man or truck is asked to call Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP or text in a tip to 274637 (CRIMES). Enter SACTIP followed by the tip information. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
