SACRAMENTO COUNTY, CA - Sacramento County sheriff's detectives say they have a man behind bars they believe is responsible for the fatal shooting of another man near a Rancho Cordova light rail station Saturday night.
Deandre Brooks, 19, of Rancho Cordova, was arrested Monday afternoon and booked into Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of murdering Juan Carlos Sanchez, 21, said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran. Curran said Brooks is also facing accusations of carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, receiving stolen property and probation violation.
According to investigators, Brooks and Sanchez were aboard a light rail train about 10 Saturday night when they became embroiled in an argument. The two disembarked at the Zinfindal Drive and Folsom Boulevard station and went behind some nearby businesses to fistfight, Curran said. At some point, detectives believe Brooks pulled out a handgun and shot Sanchez, according to Curran.
Detectives have yet to determine why Brooks and Sanchez starting arguing.
Investigators caught up with Brooks at 4:12 Monday afternoon during a traffic stop at Folsom Boulevard and Dawes Street in Rancho Cordova, Curran said. A stolen handgun was recovered at the time, he said.
Brooks was scheduled to be formally charged Wednesday in Sacramento County Superior Court. He is not eligible for bail, Curran said.
