SACRAMENTO - Tens of thousands of shoppers packed malls up and down the Valley to take advantage of Black Friday sales.
Malls reported strong showings from bargain hunters. Arden Fair Mall had 61,000 shoppers pass through its doors between 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving and 3 p.m. Friday. Mall representatives expected to welcome enough shoppers in the final seven hours of the day to beat last year's turnout of 80,000 on Black Friday.
"There were 7,000 people in the first hour," Arden Fair Director of Security Steve Reed said.
Westfield Galleria at Roseville officials said there had been a "steady stream" of shoppers after the initial rush on Thanksgiving. They did not expect to be crunching visitor numbers until Sunday evening.
Stockton's Weberstown Mall also reported "thousands" of shoppers into the overnight hours Friday morning, and general manager Tom Cleveland said 32 of his mall's stores opened at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving.
