5 people, unborn child killed in multi-vehicle crash in Lodi

LODI, CA - Five people and an unborn baby were killed in a six-vehicle crash Tuesday evening.

The crash was at the intersection of South Ham Lane and West Vine Street around 5:21 p.m., just a block away from Lodi Memorial Hospital,  Lodi police Officer Eric Bradley said.

According to the Mexican consulate, those killed in the crash include 12-year-old Irving Miranda, 7-year-old Jose Miranda, 5-year-old Stephanie Miranda, 30-year-old Luis Miranda, 31-year-old Vivian Rodriguez and her unborn baby.

Among those transported from the scene to the hospital with various injuries were 9-year-old Eden Miranda, a male driver of undisclosed age and four other individuals.  Two people were treated at the scene and released.

"This is a very complex scene," Bradley said.

Josh Ramos said he lives just doors down from the crash site. He said when he walked out his door, bodies were everywhere and people were in shock.

"People running around children outside, crying people caring for them," Ramos said.

Police said they don't know which car caused the crash or how it happened. . The Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is leading the investigation.

"These officers have been specially trained to investigate complex collisions, using both traditional techniques and advanced scientific technology," Bradley explained.

Police said they were investigating reports of a driver on a cell phone causing the crash, but they said it was too early to determine the exact cause.
