Dog lovers in Mountain House are rallying to win $100,000 to build a better park for their four-legged friends.
Mountain House is one of 15 finalists in PetSafe's "Bark for Your Park" contest, and it currently sits in second place in online voting behind Texarkana, Texas. The city with the most votes by July 31 will receive $100,000 for a dog park; four other cities will receive $25,000. PetSafe is a pet products company based in Tennessee.
"We are in second place and could use any help from our neighboring communities to jump back into the lead and win a play place for our furry friends!" Mountain House resident Christine Martin wrote in a Facebook message to News10.
Documentation on the contest page for Mountain House shows that members of the nonprofit Mountain House Dog Club have been working with local officials to get the park built since 2011. A dog park is included in the "future parks planning" section of the community's parks and leisure plan.
"Mountain House is a master-planned community whose complete build-out is still many, many years away," the dog club wrote in a letter for the contest. "Though the community's Parks, Recreation and Leisure Plan includes a future dog park to be built and maintained by our Community Services District, the land and funding for such is not available at this time. The future park is estimated to be a minimum of five years away, but it more likely in the ten-fifteen year development plan.
"With an abundance of dog owners, our club and community members have joined forces to make this priority come to fruition," the club wrote.
It is the second year that Mountain House has participated in the "Bark for Your Park" contest. The community took fourth last year.
