Toddler killed by suspected DUI driver

MODESTO, CA - A 2-year-old girl riding a scooter was killed by a suspected DUI driver Friday night.

Modesto Police responded at 8:31 p.m. to a report of a traffic accident on the 400 block of Pine Street.

Officers and medical personnel arrived and found a 2-year-old girl critically injured that had be struck by an SUV, said Modesto Police Sgt. Ivan Valencia.

The girl was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where she died.

Valencia said the preliminary investigation indicates that the girl was riding her scooter in the roadway when she was struck by the SUV.

Valencia said the driver of the vehicle, Remedios Rodriguez- Chaidez, 40, is suspected of driving under the influence.

Police arrested Rodriguez-Chaidez at his residence not far from where the accident happened for felony hit and run and felony driving while under the influence, said Valencia.

The Modesto Police Department's Traffic Unit is investigating the accident. At this point the exact cause of the collision has not been determined. Once the investigation is completed, the incident will be reviewed for additional charges.
