The Republicans love that White House tour story.
The GOP-led House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform released a video Wednesday criticizing the White House cancellation of tours because of the sequester, with the title "No Leadership, No Responsibility, No Tours."
"It's telling that the president would rather cancel White House tours during the most popular tourist season than roll up his sleeves and get to work fixing our nation's spending crisis," said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., the committee chairman.
White House officials have said the sequester - $85 billion in automatic budget cuts - forced Secret Service cutbacks in personnel needed to monitor the tours. They have also attributed the sequester to a Republican refusal to reduce the nation's debt in part by raising tax revenue from wealthy Americans.
The Democratic staff of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform responded with a statement deploring the "pettiness" of the video:
"While House Republicans are wasting time and squandering your taxpayer dollars on this silly video; they are also trying to eliminate health care for tens of millions of Americans, gut Medicaid for our poorest citizens, slash education funds for kids with disabilities, kick tens of thousands of children off Head Start, and violate our nation's commitment to seniors who rely on Medicare every single day."
