SACRAMENTO, CA - An Army sergeant who nearly lost her life to a roadside bomb in Afghanistan is getting the keys to a home without a mortgage.
Kaitlin Joiner, 26, was to receive the keys to a home in Natomas from George Strait during his Thursday night concert at Sleep Train Arena.
Joiner suffered severe head trauma when a 150 lb. improvised explosive device caused her Humvee to flip over the day before Thanksgiving in 2010.
She's the single mother of a 6-year-old girl and is planning to return to school.
Someone told Joiner about a program run by the Military Warriors Support Foundation that provides previously bank-owned homes to veterans wounded in combat.
The retired Army general who started the program was to join Strait during the ceremony Thursday night.
"Tonight will be our 293rd home," said Lt. Gen. Leroy Sisco (Ret.), "And I thank the good Lord every day I get to do this."
