MODESTO, CA - Modesto police arrested the paternal grandmother of a 1-year-old girl in connection with the toddler's shooting Sunday afternoon.
The child was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Oakland where she was listed in stable condition with a long recovery ahead of her, said Sgt. Rick Armendariz.
Monday, officers arrested 57-year-old Maria Elena Hernandez on suspicion of child endangerment because she was the little girl's caregiver when the victim was shot. Armendariz said Hernandez cannot explain how her granddaughter was injured.
Hernandez first took the toddler to a Modesto hospital and told responding police her granddaughter had been hit in a drive-by-shooting in front of her home.
Armendariz said officers went to the home on the 1600 block of Stone Leaf Court and did not find evidence nor witnesses to a drive-by shooting.
The victim and her mother live at Hernandez' home. The mother was at work at the time.
Armendariz said officers still do not know where the toddler was shot. He said the family was being uncooperative in providing information. The police investigation continues.
