MODESTO, CA - A suspect has been arrested for the violent, in broad daylight, sexual assault of a mother with her young children in a Modesto park on Oct. 18.
Detectives took John Lelan Carter, 27, of Manteca into custody Wednesday for rape, felony assault and child abuse, said Lt. Rick Armendariz.
Carter is suspected of attacking the woman in front of her children at Mancini Park on south Modesto about 2:40 p.m. that day, Armendariz said. The assault was sudden, according to police. A man came up to the victim who was holding her 1 year old, punched her and pulled her to the ground before raping her. The child fell to the ground.
Armendariz said an older woman saw the assault, grabbed the woman's toddler and 8 year old, and ran for help.
Crime scene investigators and detectives collected evidence from the scene and they used that to identify Carter. In addition, on Thursday, Armendariz said California Department of Justice technicians matched the suspect's DNA to DNA collected from the crime.
Carter is in custody at Stanislaus County Jail.
