MODESTO, CA - A teenaged girl was sexually assaulted on a city bus in Modesto Tuesday morning, police say. Passengers came to her aid and held the suspect until cops arrived.
The 15-year-old girl, who was riding a Modesto Area Express (MAX) bus on her way to school, was groped as the bus traveled on downtown streets about 7:30 a.m., said police Lt. Rick Armendariz. A passenger witnessed what was going on and got off the bus at 10 and G streets as it passed the police station. The citizen went to police for help.
Armendariz said officers met the bus as it pulled into the Transit Center on 9th Street.
When officers boarded the bus, they found several people holding down Kevin Michael Long, the suspect, Armendariz said.
Investigators learned Long first tried to strike a conversation with the teen and then proceeded to make several unsolicited sexual comments to her. Armendariz said. Then witnesses said Long lunged at the girl and molested her, Armendariz said. That's when other passengers interceded.
Long was arrested and booked into Stanislaus County jail for lewd acts with a minor, sexual battery, and parole violation. Bail was set at $200,000.
The suspect had been released from Corcoran State Prison and paroled to Modesto on Monday. Armendariz did not say why Long served time. The Megan's Law website does say Long has convictions for assault with intent to commit rape, sodomy or oral copulation; and indecent exposure. It also says he has violated sexual offender registration requirements as required by law.
