NATOMAS, CA - Those who live along Rockhampton Drive and Stanhope Way in Natomas say to find graffiti scribbled on neighborhood fences is not unusual.  But Monday morning was the first time such graffiti included the "N" word, "white power" and Nazi swastikas.

"This is a diverse neighborhood," said long-time resident Norm Green. "We all get along.  This is very, very surprising."

A passing motorist noticed the graffiti just after 7 in the morning and reported it to police, who subsequently discovered three area fences splashed with paint at Stanhope, up the block at Rockhampton, and a few streets away at Teralba Way and Truxel Road.

"It scared my girlfriend," said Julius Haynes, whose house is next door to one of the vandalized fences. "We're not letting the kids play outside."

Homeowner Tim McManus discovered the graffiti on his fence Wednesday afternoon and worked quickly to take down the offending boards.

Sacramento police said city crews would be out to clean up the rest.  The incident was being investigated as a possible hate crime.
