PLACERVILLE, CA - A rabid skunk was captured Thursday on the 300 block of Placerville Drive near the movie theater, according to the Public Health Division of El Dorado County.
Spokeswoman Margaret Williams said the skunk was seen behaving unusually, chasing cars and being aggressive. The animal was caught by an Animal Services officer, tested and determined to have nearly always fatal disease.
Anyone who thinks their pet may have had contact with the sick skunk was urged to contact Animal Services at (530) 621-5795 in Placerville.
Meantime, public health officials urged residents to take precautions against rabies by:
- Keeping pets current on their rabies vaccinations.
- Not leaving pet food out at night, as this encourages wild animals to come near the home.
- Locking pet doors at night. Open pet doors can allow wild animals access into the home.
- Contacting Animal Services if you observe an animal exhibiting aggressive or strange behavior, or if you or your pet are bitten by an animal.
