SACRAMENTO, CA - The Department of Transportation is providing California with $1.5 million in federal support for a pilot program to examine if increased police enforcement can reduce distracted driving in the Sacramento area.
"The Sacramento area is absolutely positively the right mix of people; the right traffic patterns," National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Administrator David Strickland said. "It'll give us a really good right mix of people with the right patterns to study."
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced that California will receive the federal support money to expand the Department's "Phone in One Hand, Ticket in the Other" pilot enforcement campaign to reduce distracted driving.
The program will be conducted in the Sacramento valley region comprising of eight counties and 3.8 million residents and is expected to be under way in fall 2012.
