WILTON, CA - A stretch of Highway 16 in Wilton was closed Thursday morning following the conclusion of a pursuit of a stolen 42-foot crane by California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers on scene said the driver of the stolen crane refused to pull over, driving with the boom extended from the truck during the 20-minute pursuit. Throughout the chase, the boom took out street lights, power lines, and tree branches leaving a trail of debris, damage, and power loss in its wake.

Officer Jasper Begay said the driver, later identified as Jerry Don Clonce, 54, of Arkansas, also put the crane in reverse several times, backing toward officers.

After about 20 minutes, Clonce pulled over at Highway 16 and Dillard Road and was taken into custody without further incident, officers said.

Begay said Clonce was booked into Sacramento County Jail on numerous charges.

Highway 16 was closed between Dillard and Grant Line Road for about four hours for the investigation and cleanup effort, reopening around 5:08 a.m. Power was also restored to the area shortly thereafter.

CHP officers on scene said they did not know why Clonce took the crane and would continue to investigate the incident.
