SACRAMENTO, CA -- The popular Amgen Tour of California has unveiled a challenging yet scenic route for its 2011 race with some cities returning as official hosts and other cities featured for the first time, including South Lake Tahoe and Auburn.
The Tour of California, billed as the largest professional cycling race in the U.S., runs from May 15-22 and spans more than 800 miles from the Sierra to the Southland. Organizers released videos Wednesday that show the first stages the competitors will cover.
"The 2011 Amgen Tour of California route will not only showcase the beautiful and unique landscape of California, including some of the state's most scenic landmarks, but will provide some exciting new firsts for the race as well," said race organizer and AEG Sports President Andrew Messick.
