SACRAMENTO, CA -- The race for the 3rd Congressional District seat pits heavy weight Republican incumbent Dan Lungren against political newbie, Dr. Ami Bera, who is a Democrat. The third congressional district is historically conservative, but it is now more evenly split.

The third district goes from the city of Sacramento to Citrus Heights to Rancho Cordova, Folsom, and out to Alpine County. It also includes parts of Elk Grove.

"I've been back there fighting against larger government, against excessive spending, against taxes on behalf of the small business community," said Lungren.

"I chose to run because I don't think Dan Lungren is providing that representation," said Bera.

Bera has been Chief Medical Officer for Sacramento County and Dean of Admission for UC Davis Medical School.

"As a doctor, health care has to be about patients. We have to make sure health care is affordable. We have to make sure every American has basic health care coverage," said Bera.

Bera also said, "I think we should move away from a for-profit industry and toward a not-for profit private delivery system."

Meanwhile, Lungren wants to repeal Obamacare and replace it. He said he wants to improve access and bring costs down with "the ability to purchase state care coverage across state lines."

Lungren Also talked about: Having health associations for small businesses and also expanding health savings accounts.

On immigration, Bera highlighted that he is a son of Indian immigrants who came here legally.

"We should have a legal path to citizenship. and then we should enforce those laws. we should hold employees accountable. we should have individuals accountable," said Bera.

Bera also says we should have a legal work visa program.

"We know there are certain industries where we need a work force. if there are those jobs were we can't certain people to work, we should have a work visa program," said Bera.

Meanwhile, Lungren offered some suggestions for securing the border.

"One of the things we have to do, we have to increase the presence of national guard there," said Lungren.

Lungren said We need to have more customs and border patrol forces and then more detention facilities. Finally, he said we need to evaluate what industries need temporary workers.

As for the economy, Bera has been called a "champion of the middle class."

"It's not about more taxes. It' about making sure we have taxes that support the middle class. We should make the tax cuts permanent for the middle class," said Bera.

Bera said he's in favor of tax subsidies for small businesses.

Meanwhile, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association has called Lungren "a champion tax fighter." Lungren, says he's wants targeted tax cuts.

"So you need tax cuts and you need to take hand of over-regulation off the backs of small business," said Lungren.
