Two people were hospitalized and more than a 100 were displaced after an explosion ripped through an apartment building. It happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Rancho Terrace Apartments on Mills Tower Drive near Mills Park in Rancho Cordova.

Investigators said a drug lab set up to extract honey oil from marijuana ignited inside an apartment bathroom, causing a violent explosion. A total of four units were damaged by a combination of fire and the impact of the blast. More than 50 units had to remain vacant while the investigation continues.

Investigators aren't releasing the names of the victims, but Tatyanna Dabbs said one of the two men taken to the hospital with serious injuries was her brother 25-year-old Tyree Davis.

"My brother was bloody, and his skin was hanging off, and he's hurt pretty bad," Dabbs said.

It all began when an explosion ripped through at least one of the apartments, starting a fire that spread to a second apartment.

Lanita Placido was inside her apartment when she felt the blast.

"The whole building just shook, and I said, 'oh my God what was that, 'cause it sounded like a bomb,' and everybody started screaming and running," Placido said.

Tenants began evacuating when they saw one victim on the ground with burns all over his body.

"His hands, fingers were hanging, and he was burned down his leg. The other man, he came out and he rolled around trying to get the fire out," Placido said.

Kevin Douglass, who lives nearby, said the second victim was also in bad shape.

"He started waving his arms around like he was on fire, and it seemed to me some type of acid might have been on him or something, but the EMT took him right away," Daouglass said.

A total of 146 people were displaced as a result of the explosion. Of those, 71 were in need of somewhere to stay, and the Red Cross is helping those people. It could be 24 to 48 hours before the building is deemed safe by inspectors. Investigators said those responsible for the lab could face drug manufacturing and arson charges.
