SACRAMENTO - A young man dressed in camouflage clothing with a shotgun led to the lockdown of three Land Park schools Wednesday morning.

A woman walking her child to school reported the sighting on 17th Street behind C.K. McClatchy High School, said Sacramento police officer Keith Hughes.

McClatchy, nearby California Middle School and Crocker Riverside Elementary School were immediately locked down while officers surrounded the Volvo sedan the man left parked on the street.

A few minutes later, the man returned to the car after being notified that police wanted to talk to him.

It turns out Nate Patterson had been duck hunting and put his shotgun in the trunk of his Volvo while he went out to breakfast with a friend who lives on 17th Street.

"It just turned out to be a huge misunderstanding," Hughes said.  "Until we knew, we had to treat it like it might be somebody about to go on campus."

Police shook Patterson's hand and he drove away.

The lockdowns were lifted around 9:45 a.m.
