CITRUS HEIGHTS - Police make an arrest near a DUI checkpoint after a driver takes them on a short pursuit Friday night.

Citrus Heights Police were conducting a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint in the area of Greenback Ln. and Birdcage Dr. on Friday night.

During the checkpoint operation an officer spotted a reckless driver in the area and attempted to make a traffic stop.

The driver, 25 year old Michael Ballard, refused to stop and led police on a chase in the direction of the checkpoint.

During the pursuit, Ballard drove the wrong way on Greenback Ln., struck the center divider, and destroyed city property including a curb and fencing.

All officers were given an order to abandon the checkpoint immediately out of fear for their safety.  Ballard's vehicle then became disabled and that is when he fled on foot. <>Minutes later Ballard was taken into custody and is said to have been displaying signs and symptoms of intoxication.

Ballard was booked into the Sacramento County Jail on multiple charges.
