MURPHYS, CA - Two teenagers were shot and killed by their father in an apparent murder-suicide, according to the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies were dispatched to the 1200 block of Sandalwood Drive at around 3:10 Saturday afternoon and found the body of 54-year-old Phillip Marshall on the floor in his own home along with his two dead children lying on the couch.

The family dog was also discovered dead in a bedroom.

According to sheriff's Sgt. Chris Hewitt, the victims were identified as 17-year-old Alex Marshall and 14-year-old Macaila Marshal, both students at Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp.

Hewitt said friends of the victims reported the incident upon going to the family's home after not hearing from the victims since last Thursday. They told dispatchers they looked through a window and seeing Phillip Marshall lying in a pool of blood.

Both victims, Marshall, and the dog all had a single gunshot to the head from a handgun, Hewitt said.

The investigation revealed the brother and sister were asleep on the sofa when they were shot. Phillip Marshall then turned the Glock 9mm semi-automatic handgun on himself, Hewitt said.

Sean Marshall, the mother of the victims and estranged wife of Phillip Marshall, was out of the country. Hewitt said she was located and told of the deaths.

Alex Marshall was a junior at the Bret Harte and was active in student leadership and well as the school's football and baseball programs, said Bret Harte Union High School District Supt. Michael Chimente.

Macaila Marshall was a freshman.

Chimante said grief counselors were in Bret Harte's Learning Center for students and staff.

Bret Harte students have planned a vigil for Alex and Macaila Marshall for Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the school. There will also be a public memorial on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the school's football field.

According to Hewitt, the reason for the murder-suicide was not yet known.
